Gijang Guide: Haedong Yonggungsa, Osiria and Coastal Day Trips from Busan
Choose a temple, coastal walk, market meal or theme park day without overcrowding your Gijang itinerary.
Plan a Gijang trip from Busan with Haedong Yonggungsa, Osiria coastal walks, Gijang Market and practical half-day or full-day itinerary ideas.
Gijang works well when you want to leave Haeundae Beach behind for a seaside temple, a coastal walk or a market meal. The important decision is which part of Gijang you want to visit. Choose one main attraction, then add a meal and one nearby stop rather than trying to cover every place in a single day.
Is Gijang right for your Busan itinerary?
Haedong Yonggungsa Temple sits on Busan's northeastern coast, with temple buildings overlooking the sea and rocky shoreline. It is a useful starting point if coastal scenery is your main reason for visiting Gijang.
Gijang is a wider area, however, and its attractions do not form one compact walking neighborhood. A place that looks close on a map may still require another bus ride or taxi journey.
For a short first trip to Busan, decide what you most want to do. Build the visit around Haedong Yonggungsa for the temple and sea views, Gijang Market for browsing and eating, or Lotte World Adventure Busan for rides. Add other stops only after checking the route and your remaining time.
Osiria Station or Gijang Station?
Separate the Osiria visitor area from the town and market around Gijang Station when planning your route.
For Haedong Yonggungsa, Osiria Station on the Donghae Line is one possible starting point. Visit Busan lists a connection from Exit 1 to bus 139 toward the temple. Reaching the station is only part of the journey: check the current bus stop, direction and final walk to the temple entrance in your map app.
For Gijang Market, search routes to Gijang Station instead. Visit Busan lists walking access to the market from Exit 1.
Save these Korean names before leaving:
- Haedong Yonggungsa Temple: 해동용궁사
- Osiria Station: 오시리아역
- Gijang Market: 기장시장
- Osiria Coastal Walk: 오시리아 해안산책로
- Jukseong filming set: 죽성성당 or 죽성 드림세트장
Search for the attraction itself rather than simply entering "Gijang." Comparing routes from your accommodation to each destination will help you decide where to begin. Our Naver Map guide explains how to search places and check routes in Korea.
Start with Haedong Yonggungsa and add a coastal stop
For a first visit, a straightforward plan is the temple, a meal and an optional coastal walk or cafe. It gives you a clear main attraction without committing you to several separate journeys.
The temple approach includes stairs. If you are traveling with a stroller or someone who finds stairs difficult, check access arrangements before visiting. Inside the temple, keep your voice low and follow signs about entering worship halls and removing shoes.
If you want more sea views afterward, consider the Osiria Coastal Walk. Visit Busan describes a coastal route taking in places such as Orangdae and Dongam Village.
Do not assume that the entire walk begins immediately at the temple exit. Choose an entry point and a finishing point on your map, then compare walking, bus and taxi options between them. You can enjoy a shorter section without completing the whole route.
In strong wind or rain, shorten the outdoor part of the day and spend more time over a meal or an indoor break. When choosing a sea-view cafe, check how you will reach your next stop or return bus stop as well as the view.
When to choose Gijang Market or Jukseong
Gijang Market sells seafood alongside agricultural produce. If browsing the market and having a meal are your main interests, you can start at Gijang Station and make this the focus of your visit.
Before ordering seafood, confirm the total cost. Ask whether the price depends on weight, whether cooking or table-setting charges are separate, and how many people the portion serves. Do not assume that every restaurant uses the same pricing arrangement or that a market meal will always be inexpensive.
Jukseong is another option if photography is your priority. Although often called Jukseong Church, the seaside building was constructed as a set for the drama Dream. The Korea Tourism Organization describes its interior as a gallery space. Treat it as a filming location and coastal photo stop when planning your visit, and check current arrangements if you want to go inside.
Check your return route before adding Jukseong. If another journey and public transport waits make the day too complicated, keep the visit to the temple and a coastal stop.
Half-day and full-day itinerary ideas
These are planning suggestions, not fixed tour schedules. Your accommodation, transport waits, meal choices and sightseeing pace will determine how long each option takes.
Half-day: temple and sea views
Accommodation -> Haedong Yonggungsa -> meal -> optional short coastal walk or cafe -> return.
Use this structure when you want to leave room for other parts of Busan. If the outward journey takes longer than expected, drop the optional final stop rather than rushing through the temple.
Full day: temple and market
Haedong Yonggungsa -> travel to Gijang Market -> browsing and a meal -> return.
This suits travelers who want both the temple and a market visit. Allow for the journey between them. Decide on Jukseong or a longer walk only if you still have enough time and energy.
A theme park day
If Lotte World Adventure Busan is the reason for your visit, make it the main activity. Adding the temple, market and Jukseong can leave little time for the park itself. Check the park's official website for tickets, operating hours and attraction information for your visit date.
Before you leave
Save your accommodation as well as your destinations in your map app. Each time you consider adding another stop, check the remaining journey home. That makes it easier to decide whether the extra visit fits your day.
Check the weather, current venue information and return bus or Donghae Line services before setting out. Wear shoes suitable for walking if you plan a coastal route, and choose a meal or indoor alternative for poor weather.
