Seoul Seolleongtang and Gomtang Guide: Mild Korean Soup, Breakfast, and Solo Meals
A practical guide to non-spicy Korean beef soups, breakfast, solo dining, famous Seoul restaurants, and how to season your bowl
Try mild Korean beef soups in Seoul with practical ordering tips: seolleongtang vs gomtang, seasoning, rice, kimchi, breakfast, and solo dining.
Seolleongtang and gomtang are useful travel foods because they solve a specific problem: you want a warm Korean meal that is not built around chili heat. They are especially good for breakfast, solo dining, rainy days, and meals before trains or long walks.
Seolleongtang vs Gomtang
Seolleongtang is usually milky-white from long-simmered beef bones and meat. Gomtang is often clearer and meat-focused. Both are usually mild, but the restaurant's kimchi can be spicy.
How to Season It
The soup may arrive under-seasoned on purpose. Taste it first, then add salt, pepper, and green onion little by little. Do not dump in a large spoonful of salt before tasting. Some diners add rice to the broth; others eat rice separately. Both are normal.
Where to Try It
Imun Seolnongtang, Hadongkwan, Miseongok, and Shinseon Seolnongtang are useful names to know, but choose by route and opening hours. Myeongdong, Jongno, Seoul Station, and palace-area days all pair naturally with mild soup meals.
Pick a Soup Stop That Fits Your Route
Jongno and Insadong: search 이문설농탕 (Imun Seolnongtang). VisitKorea lists it at 38-13 Ujeongguk-ro, Jongno-gu. It suits a meal near central Jongno sightseeing; check its visitor listing and current hours before making it a fixed stop.
Myeongdong: compare 하동관 본점 (Hadongkwan main store) for gomtang with 미성옥 (Miseongok) for seolleongtang. Both are listed in the Myeongdong area by VisitKorea: Hadongkwan and Miseongok. Choose the one closer to your next stop, and confirm its hours, queue and menu on the day. Listings checked September 26, 2026.
Use the Korean name in a local map app to avoid a similarly named branch. These examples are location choices, not a ranking or a guarantee that a restaurant is open when you arrive.
Good for Solo Travelers
These soups are usually served as individual bowls, so they are much easier for solo travelers than shared BBQ or large hotpots. They also move quickly, which helps on transfer days.
